Conducting Mozart's Bastien und Bastienne in Turin, Italy
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was truly a genius, even at a very young age. Hard as it is to believe, Mozart wrote not just one, but two operas in the summer of 1768 - at the age of twelve! And in two different languages: La Finta Semplice in Italian and Bastien und Bastienne in German! The full details are uncertain, but it appears Bastien und Bastienne was Mozart's first performed opera, possibly at the home of Dr. Anton Mesmer, famed for his belief in healing through magnetism and hypnosis.
Bastien und Bastienne is a singspiel - German opera with spoken dialogue. It is filled with wonderfully melodic tunes inspired by the popular music and dances of the time as well as the operatic traditions. It is a tale of the pastoral love of the rural villagers Bastien and Bastienne, though their love is tested throughout. It also features the village soothsayer Colas. All the music is absolutely delightful, but Colas's magic aria is a very inspired bit of writing. The language is all nonsense words and pseudo-Latin phrases as Colas pretends to be a great sorcerer conjuring the spells that will allow love to blossom.
Maestro Robert W. Butts will conduct a special performance of this charming work at Auditorium Opheus dell'Educatotio della Provvidenza in Torino (Turn), Italy on Saturday, October 28, 2017.
