The music of Dr. Butts ranges from chamber music to opera.  His compositions are popular with musicians and audiences alike.

The Tell-Tale Heart is an adaptation from the short story of Edgar Allen Poe.   The cast includes The Woman (soprano), The Neighbor (mezzo), the Sergeant (baritone).   I performed it with three supernumeraries as policeman, but it could be any number or none.  The original orchestration is for flute, clarinet, bassoon, violin, cello and piano.

The chamber opera Mark Twain and the General was composed to a libretto by New Jesey's award-winning playwright Jewel Seehaus-Fisher.   It tells the story of the publication of the writings of Ulysses S. Grant by Mark Twain.  Characters are Mark Twain (tenor), Ulysses S. Grant (bass), Julia Grant (soprano) and the cook (tenor).    Supernumeraries are also required in speaking roles to play the veterans of the Civil War.  The opera runs approximately 40 minutes.  It is scored for flute, bassoon, violin, cello and piano.
